the last few months Mete and I worked on the finishing of our new cd ‘in’. I’m very happy with the result! The coming months I’m happy to participate in a nice row of concerts, please check the concert-page of this website. In the meantime I’m busy preparing the release of two new albums, one with Afra Mussawisade and Kinan Azmeh, the other with my all-time friend saxophonist Mete Erker. The album ‘in’ with Mete will be released and presented January 28 at the Orgelpark in Amsterdam. The album with Afra and Kinan will be released April 8.

Here’s a post after many months of silence, just to let you know I’m still working on music in different projects. With Mete Erker we’re planning to record a new album in July, and we’ll be performing try-outs – hopefully – in May and June. Please check the concerts-page on this site. I’m honored to be part of the Markus Stockhausen Group since last december, we recorded a new album in February and will perform later this year. With my MoonTrio, with Margriet Sjoerdsma, Gatecrash, Esra Dalfidan, Esther van Heesch, Hans Timmermans, Ronald Peeters – all these bands and projects are still up and running as soon as covid-19 allows us to go ahead. Hope to see you around by that time..

Moon Trio weet de elektronica mooi te integreren in het warme bandgeluid ★★★☆☆

Op Monochromes, het tweede album dat toetsenist Jeroen van Vliet met zijn Moon Trio maakte, is het gebruik van elektronica nog beter geïntegreerd in het warme bandgeluid dan op het album Earth-Time uit 2016. In veel stukken op het mooie, wat melancholieke album zijn de zoemende synths van Van Vliet, de pulserende basnoten van Cord Heineking en de door drummer Mark Schilders aangebrachte analoge effecten niet zomaar wat versiering.

De elektronica maakt deel uit van de constructie, al is het de akoestische piano van Van Vliet die centraal staat: soms stevig in duel met bas en drums, wat zeker in de eerste paar nummers een wat opzwepend, GoGo Penguin-achtig geluid veroorzaakt.

Naarmate het album vordert nemen het tempo en de dynamiek wat af. De dan meer naar Brian Eno’s ambient neigende stukken hebben veel sfeer en zijn mooi met diepte geproduceerd; maar een beetje jammer is het verlies van energie wel, want daarmee gaat de spanning er ook een beetje uit.

Pianist Jeroen van Vliet (1965) oogst bewondering vanwege zijn lyrische spel dat gevormd wordt door een bijzondere timing, toucher en intonatie. Doordachte klanken in verschillende lagen die sfeervol of groovend tot wasdom komen. Verbonden aan uiteenlopende projecten verschijnt met regelmaat eigen werk zoals het in mei uitgebrachte ‘Monochromes’, het tweede album van Moon Trio met Cord Heineking op contrabas en drummer Mark Schilders.

Evenals op het debuutalbum ‘Earth-Time’ speelt elektronica een prominente rol. Van Vliet wil de ruimtelijkheid in zijn spel verder verbreden maar ook de bron van het geluid – de piano –  behouden. Een zoektocht naar mogelijkheden die op het debuut voorzichtig werd ingezet en op ‘Monochromes’ een meer experimenteel karakter krijgt.

Het album opent met een improvisatie, een van de vier die het album bevat. Flarden piano, verstilde experimentele klanken, een dolende bas en drums. Van de overige composities nam Van Vliet verreweg de meeste voor zijn rekening. Open stukken waarin het trio indachtig de albumtitel ‘eenkleurige’ gedachten de vrije loop geeft in een aaneensluitende sfeer. De ruimtelijkheid wordt benadrukt door een elektronica-nevel die traag over het muzikale landschap trekt.

Daarnaast bevat ‘Monochromes’ meer door melodie omlijste werken zoals het mysterieuze ‘Safar’, het verhalende ‘Ponder’, het groovende ‘Traffic’ of het tragische ‘Reminiscence’.

‘Monochromes’ is een album waarvan de samenhang zich langzaam ontrolt. Een organisch bouwsel van dicht bij elkaar liggende stemmingen, melancholisch en vervreemdend. Hoe vaker je het beluistert, hoe meer  je er door gegrepen wordt.

On April 1st 2019 Mete Erker and I release our new album ‘Pluis’, recorded last december in the Beauforthuis in Austerlitz, by Chris Weeda. We’re thrilled with the result!
