New septet to perform at Orange Jazz Days and November Music

For this year’s edition of November Music, I have the honor of receiving a composition commission. I’ve written music for a beautiful new septet, and it promises to be an adventurous musical landscape. We will perform it on October 4th during the Orange Jazz Days at TivoliVredenburg, and on November 11th in the main hall of the Verkadefabriek in Den Bosch.

Line-up: Roosmarijn Tuenter – voice and viola, Koen Smits – trumpet plus FX, Jörg Brinkmann – cello plus FX, Bram Stadhouders – guitar plus FX, Jeroen van Vliet – piano, Würlitzer-piano, Gulli Gudmundsson – double bass, Mark Schilders – drums

2 new albums

Early 2025, two beautiful CDs will be released, and I have the pleasure of being involved in both. The first is the album ‘Freeze of Life’ by vocalist Sanne Rambags, featuring stunning, serene, and emotional pieces she has written, inspired by the work of Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The second album, ‘Flod Og Fjara’, is by Icelandic bassist Gulli Gudmundsson. The music on this album has a beautiful depth and flow, and it tells the remarkable story of his grandparents, who lost each other during the tumultuous times of the early 20th century. This spring, we will be performing concerts with both groups.

Autumn with Paul van Kemenade’s Final Call

An important event in my career happened back in 1989: together with Eric van Der Westen (double bass), Pieter Bast (drums) and Hans Sparla (trombone), we were asked by alto-player Paul van Kemenade to join and form his new Quintet. I worked 18 inspiring years in the band, learning an incredible amount of skills, gaining insights, connecting to my fellow musicians in ways I hadn’t considered possible. After a break of appr. 10 years Paul re-united the band, now with the great Louk Boudestijn on trombone, and this year, 2024, is the last call for this amazing band. So please check out where we play this autumn, hope to see you there..

Levanter On Tour !

Starting from Eric’s Festival in Den Bosch on March 7th, Levanter is all set to kick off a big tour across the Netherlands. I can’t wait to hit the stage again with the two horn maestros, Eric Vloeimans (trumpet) and Kinan Azmeh (clarinet). Check out the ‘Concerts’ section on this website for all the venues and dates. Come on down and immerse yourself in the magic of our music with us!

coming up

It has been silent on my website, although not in real life. The coming months will be exciting: there will be the release of 2 albums, a great recording with flugelhorn-player Angelo Verploegen, and later the big production of the Markus Stockhausen Group with guests, among them the great guitarist Nguyên Lê. Furthermore a grand tour through the Netherlands will take place with the beautiful musicians Eric Vloeimans and Kinan Azmeh – together we are Levanter – doing 32 concerts in a row in March and April 2024. In June Paul van Kemenade’s Classic Quintet will tour extensively through Europe and the Netherlands. So there’s a lot to look forward to, I hope to see you at one of the concerts.

Good reviews on Gloom

It’s great to see some good reviews being published on our album Gloom, one of them in national newspaper De Volkskrant. Some quotes:

‘Van Vliet suprises time and again with his versatile projects’ (Volkskrant)

‘His accurate lines, with a great attention for detail, are again admirable'(Nieuwe Noten)

‘Gloom’ is a fascinating album brimming with poetry and surprises. (JazzenZo)

Beaufortune – a new composition

On Sunday June 19, my newly composed music for a new 6-piece band will be performed at the Beauforthuis in Austerlitz. It was a big pleasure to write for this ensemble and to incorporate the old church-organ and the revised Harmonium of this beautiful venue. The concert will be recorded for a video that will be shown later this year. Please come and listen!

soloist with the Metropole Orkest!

It has been a desire for many years to play as a soloist with the world-famous Metropole Orkest and now it will happen! Even better, 4 of my pieces have been beautifully arranged by Damiano Pascarelli, Callum Au and Carine Bonnefoy, so this will be a wonderful experience. Martin Fondse, Corrie van Binsbergen and Benjamin Herman will be the other soloists. The concerts take place in Lantaren Venster (March 24, 2022), Theaters Tilburg Concertzaal (Marc 29, 2022) and in the Meervaart in Amsterdam (April 6, 2022). Tickets are available here: www.mo.nl/dutchjazz

Hope to see you there!
